Dashwood Community Development Fund Committee is looking for feedback

Committee Background:

The South Huron Dashwood Community Development Fund Committee was formed by Council following the sale of the Dashwood Hydro Electric Utility.  South Huron's share of the sale proceeds were vested in South Huron to be held in a reserve fund, established and administered by the Municipality of South Huron, known as the Dashwood Community Development Fund (DCDF). Council established the Committee and provided its mandate through its Terms of Reference, to provide Council recommendations on the use of the funds.  The Committee will consider proposals from the South Huron residents in Dashwood for the use of the funds for projects benefitting the village.

Projects to be considered by the Committee may be any recreation, cultural or social project primarily benefitting the Village of Dashwood. The approximate balance of the fund is $82, 000.

A recreation, cultural or social project may be determined to be eligible for funding although such project would normally be funded by the general tax rate or by user rates applicable to users from throughout the municipality provided that:

  • The project primarily benefits the Village of Dashwood; and
  • The project is unlikely for the foreseeable future to be given priority in the normal municipal budget process.
  •  A recreation, cultural or social project is not eligible for funding if it is a capital repair, a maintenance cost or a cost of normal operations.

For more information regarding the Committee please view the Terms of Reference

The Dashwood Community Development Fund Committee is soliciting public feedback on suggestions for the disbursement of funds within the community of Dashwood.

Since the Committee's inception over 20 years ago, they have provided Council with recommendations to fund a variety of expressed community needs. Investments have been made in the Community Centre and Pavilion, Dashwood Fire Department Extrication Equipment, park amenities including playground equipment, Christmas decorations, heating, cooling and cooking equipment to name a few.

There are currently three (3) community investment opportunities that the Committee is now considering and soliciting your feedback.

On Community Beautification

1) The purchase of new electrically powered Christmas decorations. Approximately $15,500.

2) The purchase of electrical outlets and brackets on streetlight poles for the purpose of hanging these electrically powered Christmas decorations. Estimated cost is $15,000

Investing for our Future

3) Establishing a Dashwood Community Vitality Fund or a Donor Advised Fund with the Sunset Community Foundation which can provide a lasting granting opportunity in our community for many generations to come.

The Sunset Community Foundation works to make our communities stronger, more vibrant and more equitable. They support local organizations that have innovative ideas to improve Grand Bend, Northern Lambton Shores, South Huron and beyond. They provide thoughtful community leadership and attract and manage permanent endowment funds.

Since founded in the year 2000, they have supported dozens of organizations in fields from health and education to recreation and the environment, food security, children & youth, mental health, accessibility and resettlement. Making grants totaling some $2 million.

For more information visit the Sunset Community Foundation website.

With a contribution of $15,000 or more there is the opportunity through a fund agreement with the Sunset Community Foundation to define specifics of a new Dashwood fund including intentions, eligibility and geographic recipients.

Lastly, the Committee would welcome any other suggestions on community needs for the future. Please know that we do appreciate the time you are taking to complete our short survey.

This survey will run until July 8, 2024.
